How to properly maintain your bike (and what products to use) to avoid unnecessary expenses

A well-maintained bike lasts three to five times longer without major expenses. The reality: a neglected chain also means a cassette and chainrings wearing out prematurely.

A well-maintained bike lasts three to five times longer without major expenses. The reality: a neglected chain also means a cassette and chainrings that wear out prematurely. A drivetrain that «squeaks» instead of gliding smoothly wastes ten watts with every pedal stroke. Good news: 80% of bike maintenance comes down to a few simple steps, the right products, and consistency. Here’s the complete guide, along with our selection of products to fully equip your home workshop.

Why regular maintenance saves you money

Maintenance is one of the few areas in cycling where every euro spent saves you several. The most critical part, the chain, costs between €25 and €60 depending on the model. If you wait until it's completely worn out before replacing it, it will have already «eaten» the cassette (€50 to €150) and damaged the chainrings (€60 to €200). Replacing it on time therefore saves an average of €100 to €250 and just as much time on mechanical work.

How much does an unmaintained room cost?

RoomReplacement costRisk if neglected
Chain25-60 €Use cassette and trays
Cassette50-150 €Use plateaus
Bottom bracket shells60-200 €Jump, break, danger
Disc brake pads€15-30 per pairUse the disc (€50-€100)
V-brake pads€10-20 per pairUse the rim (80-300 €)

The math is simple: a degreaser + lubricant + brush kit costs about €30 and lasts for several seasons. A single new cassette saves you that cost three times over.

How often should I maintain my bike?

The golden rule: lubricate the chain every ~200 km, or systematically after riding in the rain. A thorough cleaning (frame + drivetrain) every 500 to 1,000 km. A complete overhaul at a shop once a year, ideally in the spring.

City bike, road bike, mountain bike, e-bike: different paces

  • City bike (6-12 miles/week): Lubricate every 3 weeks, clean once a month, annual inspection.
  • Road bike (Club rides): lubrication every ~200 km, deep clean every 2 rainy rides, chain check every 1,500 km.
  • VTT Cleaning after every muddy ride, drivetrain degrease every 2-3 rides, annual suspension check.
  • VAE : all of the above + battery check (full cycle 1x per month) and controller firmware update if needed.

The essential materials and products

Cleaners and degreasers

  • General bike cleaner (Muc-Off Nano Tech, F100, or equivalent) for frame, wheels, and accessories.
  • A dedicated chain cleaner (Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner, Park Tool CB-4) for the drivetrain. With regular use, it’s a worthwhile investment.
  • Budget-friendly alternative: a mixture of black soap + lukewarm water for the frame, diluted engine degreaser for the drivetrain (use with caution).

Lubricants: Dry Weather vs. Wet Weather

  • Dry lube (wax or polymer): for the warm season. Advantage: does not retain dust, clean transmission. Disadvantage: needs to be reapplied more often (~150-200 km).
  • Wet weather lubricant (oil): for rainy outings or winter months. Advantage: lasts for several outings even when wet. Disadvantage: attracts dust, black drivetrain.
  • Pro tip To have both at home, and adapt according to the weather.

Greases, brushes, cloths, and accessories

  • Mechanical grease (Park Tool PPL-1, Shimano premium) for threads, seatpost, axles.
  • Ergonomic 3-sided chain brush for degreasing link by link.
  • Set of microfiber cloths dedicated to cycling (never used for car or kitchen).
  • Basic repair stand (€60-150): transforms maintenance experience, especially for gears.

Products and actions to absolutely avoid

⚠️ The 3 mistakes that ruin a bike

  1. High-pressure jet (Kärcher) pushes water into the bearings (crankset, hubs, headset). Result: seizing within a few months.
  2. WD-40 on brake discs irreversible contamination of rotors and pads, braking has become dangerous.
  3. Dish soap straight on the frame : aggressive for varnishes and certain paints. Use mild soap or a dedicated cleaner.

The 4-step method

1. Transmission pre-rinse and degreasing

Spray degreaser onto the chain while pedaling backward. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Brush link by link with a chain brush. Rinse with clean water (gentle stream, not high pressure).

2. Frame and wheel wash

Wet the bike from top to bottom. Apply frame cleaner. Brush gently (soft brush for the frame, toothbrush for nooks and crannies, firmer brush for the wheels). Rinse.

3. Drying and inspection

Microfiber cloths for drying everything. Take the opportunity to inspect: tire sidewalls, cable tension, bearing play (grab the wheel, pull left to right, no play is acceptable). Any clicking or squeaking noted here = needs to be addressed.

4. Targeted lubrication

One drop of lubricant per link (and ONLY per link, not on the side), pedal backward about twenty turns, then wipe off the excess with a clean cloth. The chain should be shiny but not dripping. Too much lubricant attracts dust and accelerates wear: less is more.

Specific chain maintenance (the critical part)

A road bike chain typically lasts 2,000 to 4,000 km, depending on maintenance. On mountain bikes in wet conditions, this drops to 1,000–1,500 km. Check for wear every 1,000 km using a dedicated gauge: if it’s under 0.75 mm, everything is fine. Between 0.75 and 1 %, plan to replace it. Above 1 %, replace it immediately, otherwise the cassette will follow. A new chain on a worn cassette will jump under load, so you’ll need to replace both.

FAQ - Bike Maintenance

Can I wash my bike at the car wash?

No: High pressure forces water into all the bearings and speeds up their seizure.

How often should the crankset be greased?

Once a year for leisure use, twice for intensive use. A complete overhaul in the workshop always includes this check.
